How-To

Cooks' Helpers

Martha Stewart Living, June 2006

When you're making that quick bread, can you swap a muffin tin for a loaf pan? How many tablespoons are in a cup? Our handy kitchen charts have all the answers. We designed three: baking pan substitutions, measuring equivalents, and candy-making temperatures. Turn each one into a refrigerator magnet or a laminated card. Either way, the information will be at your fingertips.

Magnet and Card How-To
These charts can be made into magnets or laminated cards. You'll find the necessary materials at office-supply stores.

To make magnets: Download charts and print them onto magnetic sheets. Cut out with scissors.

To make cards: Color-photocopy or download and print charts onto heavyweight matte paper; cut out. Laminate according to package instructions; trim.

This is the measurement conversion site I use... you can always make your own conversion list and tape it over the template.

bklyndoll, one pound of flour can yield varying amounts in volume depending on factors such as: whether it it sifted or packed down, the type of flour, etc. If the recipe says a pound, better to use the weight measure than try to convert to volume (cups)

I'm an American in Australia, and also need to be able to convert recipes from grams to ounces.

I would love to have a chart converting metric to pounds and ounces. We just moved to BC, Canada where things are some things measured in pounds (fruits and vegetables) and some in metric (meat, fish, spices, flour, etc.) . Took me a while to figure out how much fish or meat to buy for dinner.

Is there a chart to convert weight to dry measure, such as a pound of flour into cups, etc? I find recipes from England or Chile sometimes call for a pound of flour.

I live in Canada where many recipes are in metric and would LOVE it if someone could post (or Martha create) a version that is universally friendly!

Yes, please, Metric would be wonderful. Even better, could someone please put out conversion charts for the Imperial, Australian, Japanese and other International Cooking Measurements Comparisons all in one convenient place (magnet for like these would be the best). I love reading international cookbooks and magazines, but have trouble with the different systems.

These templates are wonderfully helpful as well as fashionable! I printed them out on a cream/yellow-colored card stock for a slightly more "antique" look that matched my kitchen. Soon, I plan to laminate and add magnet backing that way.

Wow, These are GREAT! I Printed them on Matte Photo Paper as the instructions said, then made them with the magnet sheets....An Indispensible item in my kitchen! Great to just use as refigerator magnets, I always know I have these in recipe books.....but it took forever to find the right book and where they were. Now they are always just right there at a glance.....thanks again for another great USEFUL craft.
