Faux Bois Candles

Introduction

A beautiful table accessory, faux bois, or "fake wood," candles are a simple and fun craft to make.

Materials

  • Pillar candle
  • Sheet of beeswax
  • Glazing medium mixed with gold acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Wood-graining tool
  • Scissors
  • Hair dryer

Steps

  1. Step 1

Lay beeswax sheet on a flat, clean surface. Brush sheet with glazing medium mixed with gold acrylic paint.

  2. Step 2

Drag wood-graining tool across wax sheet. You can drag the wood-graining tool across the wax sheet as many times as needed to create the look you prefer, just be sure to wipe the tool between uses. Let dry for at least an hour.

  3. Step 3

Cut sheet of beeswax to size that will wrap around your pillar candle. Use a hair dryer set on medium to warm both the candle and the beeswax slightly.

  4. Step 4

Align edges of glazed sheet with top and bottom of candle and roll sheet gently into place. Smooth out the seam with your fingertips, being careful not to smudge the glaze.

My only question would be: is it safe to burn something that has been painted with acrylic paint and glaze? Does it produce any toxic fumes?

Come on folks, stop whining. Obviously the picture is the wrong one. So look at the video to see what it looks like. It looks like a great project. I'm going to make it tomorrow!

The candles in the photo are not being represented by the instructions. I am an instruction-publisher/writer, and MUCH more could have been written to help acheive the items in the photo. I could not rate this, as there was no catagory for improvement. However: to support the project I would say that IF there were more added to this project in the way of instructions and demo photos, then it would be a wonderful project!

Those look to cast from commercial molds. Really great job on them. A photo of this project would have been helpful.
