Project

Medusa Hair

Inexpensive rubber pests are all you need to create a creepy Halloween costume.

Introduction

Create squirming braids reminiscent of the mythological reptilian-haired woman.

Tip: Add an intimidating reptilian slither to your handshake. Choose a small rubber snake, and weave it through your fingers and over the back of your hand. Use eyelash glue or skin-adhesive squares beneath the snake to hold it in place.

Materials

  • Hair extensions
  • Bobby pins
  • Rubber snakes

Steps

  1. Step 1

Buy three hair extensions and braid them. If you have long hair, separate it into ponytails and braid them, too. For short hair, just pin up ends.

  2. Step 2

Wrap braids (real and extensions) into a bun; pin, and weave in small snakes.

  3. Step 3

Use bobby pins to secure larger snakes that dangle: Thread a needle with wire and poke it through a snake's underside, and tie wire around a pin; slide pin into hair.

I would like to know how Martha created her headpiece of snakes for her 2008 Medusa costume. Thank you

I am definitely going to do this!!! I have long hair so I am going to the night before put my hair in toilet paper/rags by taking 1/2-inch-inch sections of damp hair then twisting it and wrapping it by using toilet paper. you wrap it to the scalp and tie it. Once dried in the morning take out tp and you get that snake look to your hair. Pin up and then add the braids and snakes as suggested. Thanks for the idea!!!

does anyone know how to make a headpiece just like the one martha wore on her 2008 halloween episode? the one where her costume was like medusa turned to stone?

I actually saw this and got the idea to be Medusa for Halloween but I am going to use the "Paper-wig" idea more. I used green construction paper for the hair curled it like the instructions said then added snakes (if you can't find snakes I thought that you could possibly used lightly stuffed socks and put a wire in them to make them bend like they are slithering) also I am going to wear a toga like costume

I love this idea - any suggestions for the rest of the costume?

You can find rubber snakes at fakerubbersnakes.com for a reasonable price. Also, your local dollar store might have them in stock too. Hope this helps!
