Tall Talk with Arianne Cohen

You may have suspected that being tall has its advantages, but Arianne Cohen, author of "The Tall Book," presents the case.

It Pays to Be Tall
According to multiple studies conducted all around the world, tall people are more successful in the workplace, and make an average of $789 more per inch. The reason for this is largely behavioral: Tall individuals often take on leadership roles at a young age because their peers relate to them as if they were an older child.

In an office environment, it is quite common for the taller men or women to de facto-decide things such as where a group will go for lunch. Then, when it comes time for promotions, these tall workers are often selected since they are already exhibiting leadership qualities.

When it comes to body language, tall people are also related to in the workplace as a boss. When friends talk to each other, they traditionally lean in about 18 inches apart. Co-workers, on the other hand, remain about 3 feet apart, and bosses generally are given 4 feet of personal space during a conversation. Tall individuals, much like a boss, are also traditionally given 4 feet of personal space.

Don't Underestimate Your Height Potential
Despite a popular belief, all people around the word have the same height potential and will be tall if they are raised with good nutrition and health care. Height is genetically encoded in a woman's ova; when you are starved, your genetic coding is altered to survive in a low-food situation.

What About Baby?
You can predict a baby's adult height when he or she is 13 months old -- not 12, not 14, but 13. At 13 months, babies are between growth spurts and their brains are catching up with previously made physical progress. This means that all premature babies will have caught up, size-wise, to full-term babies, and kids who will be off-the-charts tall will not have started to sprout just yet -- leaving your child in proportion to how they will be as an adult. For example, if your 13-month-old baby girl is in the 50th percentile for height, you can reference an adult height chart and surmise that she will also be in the 50th percentile for adults, or approximately 5 feet 4 inches.
