    Unless they're down on hands and knees for an outdoor egg hunt, people tend to overlook the exquisite shapes and tones of minuscule spring flowers. Give these plants the close-up they deserve by using eggcups as vases, which can hold pink lilies of the valley, species tulips, grape hyacinths, narcissus, violets, pansies, bleeding-heart leaves, and other small wonders. Try several cups on a tray for an Easter centerpiece or a single one to cheer up a desk or a bureau.

    Sweet fragrances and sunrise colors fill this vase with bright promise for the New Year. Kumquats and limes evoke a tropical getaway, as do lush blossoms of phalaenopsis orchids (available at many supermarkets). The perfumes of paperwhite narcissus and jasmine are a surefire pick-me-up. As you make the arrangement, insert the sturdy citrus branches before adding the delicate flower stems. For a final touch, let some jasmine trail down the side.

  5. Amaryllis Candle Centerpiece

    With the help of these candle and flower centerpieces, the whole table will shine. For each one, use candle wax to attach a small floral frog to the center of a shallow bowl. Push a taper into the floral frog to secure. Pour water into the bowl. Clip amaryllis blooms (or other large flowers) from their stems, and arrange them in the bowl around the candle.

  6. Roses and Kale Basket

    This unusual pairing features two items with similar budlike shapes: creamy-white roses and emerald-green ornamental kale.

    Basket How-To
    If your basket has gaps in its sides, weave a ribbon through the rungs. Next, tuck a plastic liner inside, and then trim a block of floral foam to fit. Soak the foam in water and set it in the liner. Push the kale and rose stems into it. Do the same with sprigs of pine around the edges. Finish by wrapping branches of pine around the handle, securing them with floral wire. The display will stay fresh for several days.
