Cocktails at sundown are more memorable when you supplement the waning daylight with Asian-inspired lanterns. Those hanging from bamboo poles are origami "balloons" fashioned around battery-operated lights and finished with ribbons.
How-To
Fold a 25-inch square of vellum paper following the illustrations; blow into the bottom to expand the paper, and thread a 4-foot piece of string through the hole and out the bottom of the lantern. Tie a battery-operated candle to string 18 inches from end. Attach a large paper clip to the string about 3 inches above the candle. Pull on the other end of the string until the paper clip catches on the top of the lantern. Tie a ribbon to string at bottom of balloon; trim excess string. Tie other end of string to a pole.

I made a small sample too and I think I got it right but I noticed in the picture that you can't see the seams on the lanterns. Did I do something wrong because I've got very big and noticeably seems? Maybe the ones in the picture are glued. I also just used printer paper for the prototype, so maybe that's why.
The filtered word is 'h o l e.' How silly!
I made a small sample to figure it out. (I do origami, so I guess I have a head-start there.) More pictures of what to do would really help.
You have to make a tiny [filtered word] in the top, and finagle the light into the lantern, but it can be done.
Good luck!
I DESPERATELY want to make these for my child's sleepover party for guests ... BUT I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND THE VERY BRIEF 'INSTRUCTIONS' !!! VERY FRUSTRATING - as they look so fabulous!!!
Where do I find the vellum paper for this project? Thanks!
