Storing Knives

Storing knives properly helps them to maintain their edges. Here are some ways to make sure your knives stay their sharpest.

Knife Covers
If you're going to keep your knives loose in a drawer, be sure to encase them in the covers they came in -- or in a plastic knife cover.

In-Drawer Tray
An in-drawer knife tray, with slots for different blade and handle sizes, keeps knives from colliding, which dulls and damages edges. Label each slot indicating which knife goes where to make it easier to put away your knives, and to find the ones you need when cooking.

Magnetic Strips
A wall-mounted magnetic strip is another great storage option.

    I glued a bunch of wine corks to a paint stick and used museum wax to stick it in my kitchen utensil drawer. The knives fit snugly in the space between each cork.

    I can not do these particular tips becasuse of no space left in my kitchen. So, out of desperation, I use real wine corks that I have saved through the years. Mostly from wine tastings I have poured.

    In a wooden knife block, do the steak knife blades and other knives face up or down in the slot? They came facing downward but I have been told to place then facing upward.

    Concerning razor blades. I wash them after use and pat dry. Even the disposable blades last for months when I do this. Using a hair dryer might even be better. Blades have gotten too expensive.

    Good source for magnetic strips - the Container Store. [if you're lucky you live near a store]. I have two - using one for knives and the other for kitchen shears, potato nails, peeler, bottle opener and other oft-used metal utensils.

    had mine for years .... and the my son (who's handy in the kitchen ) bought one ... it was too long for the side of the cupboard so he put it on an angle ...smart boy

    I just bought a magnetic strip from Amazon, the MIU France 90009 Knife Holder, Magnetic, Stainless, 20-inch size, and I love it! It's very heavy duty and at around $28, a bargain to boot (also free shipping!). I'll never use a knife block again.

    Making sure to COMPLETELY dry the blades before storing them (in any way) also helps a great deal. The drying process warps the blades over time and dull them.

    This is also helpful for razors!!! (Use a hair dryer to dry the blades after use and NEVER store in the shower or tub!)

    I have used a magnetic strip for 30 years and I love it. The knives are always within easy reach and never clutter a drawer where I would have to rummage through them and probably cut myself. I also find that sharpening them is alot easier to do when I can see to replace them so easily.

    I got this type of magnetic strips at Ikea and they work very well. One strip holds 6 knives.

    If you have to store your knives in a block it's best to store them upside down so the blades don't pull across the wood. This dulls them.
