Pretty Ice Bowls

Here's a way to serve must-be-chilled foods and make your table sparkle: Create ice bowls decorated with edible flowers, herbs, or citrus slices. You'll need 2 glass or stainless steel bowls; one should fit inside the other with 1/2 inch to 1 inch between them. Scatter some adornments in large bowl. Place small bowl inside; tape so rims are flush. Pour water between bowls to 1/2 inch from top. Add more adornments; arrange with a skewer. Freeze overnight. Let stand at room temperature, on a dish towel, until bowls separate easily, 10 to 20 minutes. Remove tape. Lift top bowl; invert bottom bowl to remove ice bowl. Freeze until needed. If food should stay dry, set a glass bowl within ice bowl. Place a dish towel underneath to catch drips.

    I don't have any glass or stainless steel bowls that are the appropriate sizes. Will plastic bowls work? Happy Thanksgiving!

    I did this and got lots of oohs and ahs. I used one bowl for shrimp sauce and the other for shrimp. Be careful to display the bowl on a tray or on a jellyroll pan; I forgot about the shrimp sauce bowl and once it started melting, it caved in on one side and shrimp sauce leaked out on to a napkin I had placed underneath it.

    I did this with lemon and lime in the ice as a container for the lemon water I served at a baby shower last weekend. Everyone loved it, until I went to fill the water up a second time and the side of the bowl got a [filtered word] and the entire contents of the bowl ended up on the floor. Be careful and make sure you use nesting bowls that have enough space between them that the ice will be very thick. And chill the beverage that will be used before pouring it into the bowl. Will try again.
