Michel Perrin Handbags

The Martha Stewart Show, February 2009

Guest Michel Perrin is the chairman of the venerable leather goods company Perrin Paris, a family business that has been in existence for more than 100 years. Established in 1893 in Paris, the business benefited greatly from the industrial age, which revolutionized the manufacturing of gloves thanks to the invention of the Singer sewing machine. Most recently, Perrin Paris launched a line of designer handbags -- one of which is named after Martha!

The Martha Bag
Perrin was inspired to create the beautiful and functional Martha bag when flying with Martha to her house in Maine. While on the plane, Martha emptied a big tote with miscellaneous items onto the floor and commented that she wanted to be able to keep everything in a clutch, travel-type bag. And voila! The Martha bag was born.

Additional bags and gloves seen on the show include:

The Fall/Winter 2008 Collection
1. Bracelet gloves in black and brown kid skin.
2. Long gloves with ruching detail in black.
3. Attelage, green with ivory piping (also comes in black, dark brown, and acid green).
4. Attelage, glove bag with metal frame in kid skin, black (also comes in brown).

The Spring/Summer 2009 Collection
1. Pochette large clutch in platinum (also comes in black).

I love this clutch! But ouch! on the price. Find us stuff we can afford!

  • 18 Mar, 2009

I love this bag but like the majority of your viewers, I cannot afford the price. Can you recommend a comparable one that I purchase? I love the messenger bag from the January issue of MSL. Where can I purchase it?

I love the bag and went to the website to purchase until I saw the price............what more can I say that has not already been said? I make a good living, but Martha, you must remember - not many viewers make your salary! I will not pay that much for this item. $50 - $75 is more my range and I believe you could have made that happen.

I, like most of the rest of the women who commented, would really like to have this little bag. Too much money for my blood. Just a plain common person. Please consider coming out with one that is reasonably priced for the everyday woman. $50. to $75. is a more reasonable range.

I love the Martha Bag and would really like to have one but like most, the economy is not such that I can buy it now.. BUT, I have a plan!
I have a big jar and I toss my change into it. This is my 'wishing jar' and it is for things I wish I had! I know where my wishing jar money is going now when I fill it up! When I get $299 in my jar (whenever that is!), I am getting the Martha Bag and I will enjoy it for many years!
So, get out a big jar and start saving. I am!

I agree with everyone that it's too pricey, even though it is good quality. If anyone does produce this with the mainstream market in mind, I would like to see a long cross-body strap so that one can be hands-free. As it is you can't even put your hand through the handle. As a comment for the Perrin company, they should include more detail, lining materials, and interior views on their website - nobody's going to spend that kind of money without even seeing inside a bag.

This is a wonderful bag-but I don't know anyone who can afford it! Martha would have done the design greater justice if she had worked with a mainstream leather company such as Fossil for manufacture and retail in the $50-75.00 range. She could have marketed it through her association with Macy's where it could be held and considered for possible purchase by many of us.

Absoluely love the concept - this is what I really need however the price is out of my range also.

  • 20 Feb, 2009

I think the quality shows through. The designs are beautiful. In this economy, people still have different price points. Those with money - always want to get what they pay for and to buy things that are investments. I have seen Martha show handbags that she has kept for decades...

in this should be showing bags and purses from Target..not 1100 dollar bowling bags

  • 11 Feb, 2009

Really nice bags, but definitely out of most people's price range given the current economic environment. Maybe a similar bag, not made of leather, could be designed after this, and be more affordable. It's a perfect design for holding everyday essentials. It's unfortunate Perrin's bags are so expensive.

  • 10 Feb, 2009

These bags are exquisite! I find the prices to be reasonable given the quality of the bags. I won't, however, be buying one. I will be giving my money to the local food bank instead. I cannot justify carrying such a bag when people I know are going hungry. Yes, Martha, middle class and even upper middle class people in the US are going hungry.

I am going to use a zippered Bible book cover and modify the inside to handle my storage needs, such as elastic strips and an inexpensive wallet dissected to attach the needed parts inside. You can find the covers at as well as other places. It will be soft-sided but I don't think that will be an issue for me.

By the way, I went to the Sale page of clutch bags and Michel Perrine was not listed! Please make this bag affordable with the same grade of leather, etc. - I might add. Affordable would be around $100.00.

I guess you received my comment on another page but wanted to make sure this one was printed on this page - I cannot believe that you would promote such an expensive bag (Martha bag) which I love and looked it up to purchase until the price came up - Martha, do you realize we are close to a depression - people losing their jobs, homes, etct and you think we can afford this bag - I want to compare you to Barney Frank - he made a bundle of money off of people and did not bat an eye! I

    Ohhh, Martha,
I love the bag but I can't afford it. Send me an email when you have your yard sale. From just a regular gal.

  • 6 Feb, 2009

Are you insane? Most people can't afford $1000 to buy a PURSE, especially in this economy. Thanks, Martha.

Ditto ....... Love "the Martha" bag, but a little to pricey..... >sigh<

Absolutely love this bag! Very dissapointed in the price for the average person! Where can we find a knock off. Or better yet, the Martha Stewert version?
