Sugar Skulls




Decorate your home for Halloween with these simple black-and-white sugar skulls.

Resources: Sugar skull molds are available from All other tools and ingredients are available at stores where baking supplies are sold.


  • Sugar skull molds
  • Sugar skull mixture: 4 cups sugar, 4 teaspoons meringue powder, 10 to 12 teaspoons water (depending on humidity)
  • Piece of scrap cardboard about the same size as mold
  • Royal icing: 1/2 cup meringue powder, 1 cup water, 2 pound bag powdered sugar, food coloring
  • Hand mixer
  • Applicator bottles


  1. Step 1

    Make sugar skull mixture: Mix together, thoroughly, 4 cups sugar, 4 teaspoons of meringue powder, and 10 to 12 teaspoons of water.

  2. Step 2

    Make royal icing: Mix 1/2 cup meringue powder with 1 cup water. Using a hand mixer, whisk until mixture is foamy. Add powdered sugar and whisk to combine. Distribute royal icing among applicator bottles and add food coloring to create different colors.

  3. Step 3

    Pour sugar mixture into skull mold. Rub the excess off the back to make it smooth. Place cardboard on top of the mold. Let dry for 5 to 8 hours or until hard.

  4. Step 4

    Flip mold over and slide hardened skull halves out onto cardboard.

  5. Step 5

    Decorate skull with royal icing in different colors.

    This Recipe is totally inaccurate! Go to for the real recipe, because you don't want to waste your time! It takes about three days to do a full batch, and that's only if it's not raining. 4 cups of sugar will only make two large complete skulls, and 10 to 12 teaspoons of water is for a 10lb bag of sugar!

    This episode was really cute. LL seems almost shy. If you can believe that. He is truly talented. And the guy Martha is referring to in the green shirt in the back that is my cousin! That is Chip! Isn't he a cutie?? He's been with Martha Stewart for a while. Loves his job... Chip you looked good my love!
