  • Sugar skull mixture: 4 cups sugar, 4 teaspoons meringue powder, 10 to 12 teaspoons water (depending on humidity)

  • Piece of scrap cardboard about the same size as mold

  • Royal icing: 1/2 cup meringue powder, 1 cup water, 2 pound bag powdered sugar, food coloring

  • Hand mixer

  • Applicator bottles

steps

  1. Make sugar skull mixture: Mix together, thoroughly, 4 cups sugar, 4 teaspoons of meringue powder, and 10 to 12 teaspoons of water.

  2. Make royal icing: Mix 1/2 cup meringue powder with 1 cup water. Using a hand mixer, whisk until mixture is foamy. Add powdered sugar and whisk to combine. Distribute royal icing among applicator bottles and add food coloring to create different colors.

  3. Pour sugar mixture into skull mold. Rub the excess off the back to make it smooth. Place cardboard on top of the mold. Let dry for 5 to 8 hours or until hard.

  4. Flip mold over and slide hardened skull halves out onto cardboard.

  5. Decorate skull with royal icing in different colors.
