The Martha Stewart Show, November 2006

This english walnut ornaments turned out so gorgeous. It's an easy project to do, although a bit time-consuming. Its great to do while watching t.v. TIP: I cut out step #2, spraying the styrofoam ball, when making the second ornament because the gold spray fills all the nooks and crevices sufficiently during step #4, spraying the ornament after the walnuts are in place.
Do you use the whole nuts or do you need to take out the inside so it doesn't rot? I'm planning on making this as a gift for someone to keep for years-any thoughts?
I used 4 pounds (!) of walnuts with approx 35 nuts/pound. (total=about 140). The walnuts were fairly pricey too. It's a lovely ornament but it's really, really big so if I were to do it again, I would make a smaller one with hazelnuts like Martha says in her video above. Our house is small and it looks very large hanging in the window. In my opinion, the 8" size would be more suited for a house with high ceilings, or larger windows.
Des anyone have any idea how many walnuts this uses?
