Painted Fern in Strawberry Jar
This summer, Martha fills her strawberry pots with Japanese painted ferns, whose fronds are a striking gray-green with burgundy highlights.
To plant these ferns, place some shards at the bottom, and fill the pot with soil up to the first hole.
Remove the plant from its nursery pot, and gently tease the roots with your fingers.
Place the plant into the pot, and push the foliage through the hole; repeat with remaining holes.
Once the holes are filled, the mouth of the pot will have room for a few more ferns or another variety of plant.
