Sometimes the best tools are the ones you can create yourself, like this cut-off balloon whisk that Martha makes to spin sugar. Using wire cutters, she snips off the top of a balloon whisk just at the point where the looped wires begin to bend and form a teardrop shape. Then, she dips the adapted whisk into melted sugar to decorate caramel apples with sugary webs. The widely spaced wires enable her to spin the sugar easily into strands of uniform thickness.
