Wire Skimmer

Everyday Food, September 2006

This metal mesh, which resembles a spider's web, allows you to safely remove food from hot liquids.

How It's Used
The wide, shallow bowl-shaped mesh of a wire skimmer is made for lifting large quantities of vegetables out of a pot of simmering liquid or removing pasta from boiling water, among other uses. The long handle, available in metal or wood, keeps your hands away from the heat.

Where To Find It
Wire skimmers, also called wire scoops or spiders, are sold in kitchen-supply stores and some supermarkets. They're reasonably priced in a wide range of sizes.
