Floating Ornaments

Nearly weightless, these honeycomb paper ornaments seem to hover rather than hang. They're as easy to make as paper snowflakes.

Materials

  • Clown ornament template
  • Honeycomb paper
  • Double-sided tape
  • Tweezers
  • Pins
  • Fabric glue
  • Juice glass
  • Metallic bead
  • 32-gauge tinned copper wire
  • Scissors
  • Silver cord
  • Tapestry needle

Steps

  1. Step 1

Trace templates onto honeycomb paper; position paper so that its lines are perpendicular to dotted lines on templates. Place double-sided tape on 1 side of cutouts. Unfold to make shapes; pinch taped seams closed with tweezers.

  2. Step 2

Use a pin to dab clear fabric glue onto center; press inward to bind. Lay flat; gently weight with a juice glass. Let dry 30 minutes. Slide a metallic bead onto middle of an 8-inch length of 32-gauge tinned copper wire. Twist at bead. Use a pin to make a hole in glued center; pull both ends of wire through until bead is flush with center. On reverse side, thread 1 end of wire through 1 hole of a second bead; thread other end of wire through bead's opposite hole. Twist ends to secure; trim excess. Gently open taped seam; sandwich an 8-inch-long silver cord in seam to form a loop.

  3. Step 3

String a small metallic bead onto middle of a 20-inch-long silver cord; knot to secure. Use a tapestry needle to thread ends of cord up through bottom pendant; secure taped seam with clear fabric glue. String a large bead onto both ends of cord. Thread cord up through top pendant; glue seam. Knot cord to form loop.

I downloaded the template for the floating ornatments but the template is incorrect. I get the "clown ornament" template instead. Please correct the link as i would love to make some of these ornaments for Christmas presents. Thanks a million. I love having access to all the MS templates.

Please give us another source for the honeycomb paper or perhaps Martha's line at Michael's will carry it in the future?

Thank you faithful crafters for finding a source for honeycomb paper.Did I miss the reference of where it can be found on the instruction? If so, why wouldn't it be included in a list of items needed?

  • kathyvs 15 Dec, 2008

If you read down on the Kamya site they say that their source is discontinuing the paper.
The source I used did answer my email and they are still selling the paper. The email address is: posibendr@worldnet.att.net

I was able to download template. I was looking for something lightweight to hang to enliven a boring ceiling that would not be dangerous and this looks perfect! . I plan to use these simple lightweight ornaments to decorate a banquet room for my daughter's party. Thanks Martha I'll post pitures of the room after the party!
