Tools and Materials
1/2 yard of fabric
1/2 yard contrasting color fabric
18-inch pillow
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Pillow How-To
1. Cut one 19-inch square and two 19-by-12-inch rectangles. Lay rectangles on square so they overlap a few inches in the middle (this will be the opening to insert the pillow). Pin all the way around; sew with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
2. Cut away some seam allowance by snipping diagonally across each corner. Turn right side out; insert pillow through opening. For the contrasting sleeve, cut a 19-inch square (for a 1/4 sleeve, cut a 19-by-14-inch rectangle).
3. Fold in half end to end, and sew along ends and fold (snip corners as before). Turn right side out; slip over pillow.
19" IS 19" WHIICHEVER WAY YOU CUT IT AND CANNOT BE CUT FROM 18". THE SELVEDGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT - IT'S ADDED TO THE 36" OR 45" WIDTH. BUT APART FROM THAT, THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE CLEAR AS MUD.

Yes, you're correct: 1.5 yard is only 18 inches. However, you're forgetting the selvedge. The selvedge is 45 inches wide, thus you can get your 19 inches with plenty to spare. Hope this makes sense!

Fabric is usually 36 or 45 inches wide, so that is the side that you would get your 19" from. The 18" side is where the 12" comes from
How do you get 19-inch square from 1/2 yard of fabric? 1/2 yard is only 18 inches...
