Project

Versatile Stools

A customized camp stool makes for more than just a convenient seat. Artfully refurbished, it will function as a nifty side table in a sunroom or on a porch.

Materials

  • Fabric
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Sander
  • Paint
  • Staple gun

Steps

  1. Step 1

Remove the existing canvas. Use it as a template to cut fabric for a new seat, making the fabric 1 inch wider. Fold each long side of the fabric over 1/4 inch two times; hem.

  2. Step 2

Lightly sand the frame, and apply 2 coats of exterior paint; let dry. With a staple gun, attach one end of fabric to the underside of one of the frame's crossbars; repeat on other crossbar, stretching fabric taut.

Use a tray or even just a colorfully painted square of 1/2 plywood on top of the stool to use it as a table. A large tile would work also.

Unless you add some support bar under the canvas don't attempt to use this as a table. Anything with weight place on the canvas will cause the stool to fold and then collapse on the floor. It's a great way to add extra seating. And what's with the extra leg or whatever that is in the picture between the stool and the couch?
