Add a pop of color to any outfit with these simple-to-sew fabric clutches from Robin Grawunder. Include a personalized label on the bag's interior, if desired.
Clutch
Tools and Materials
- Decorative fabric for outside of clutch
- Fabric for lining
- Heavyweight fusible stabilizer
- Fusible fleece
- Rotary cutter
- Grid ruler
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating machine-sewing thread
- Transparent tape
- Bond 527 Multi-Purpose Cement
- Metal clutch frame hardware
Clutch How-To
1. Cut 13-by-13 1/2-inch pieces from outer fabric, lining fabric, and heavyweight fusible stabilizer. Cut a 10 1/2-by-13-inch piece of fusible fleece. With an iron, fuse heavyweight stabilizer to wrong side of outer fabric, then fuse fleece to center of stabilized side of fabric.
2. With right sides of outer and lining fabrics together, sew 1/2-inch seams along both longer 13 1/2-inch edges.
3. Turn sewn pieces so right sides are facing out, and press seams flat.
4. Fold in half, matching seams at top, with lining on inside. Sew a 1/4-inch seam on outside raw edges, then trim seam allowances to 1/8 inch and snip in at the corners. Turn again, so outside fabric is on the inside. Sew 1/4-inch seam along edges, creating a finished French seam, then turn right side out.
5. Fold corners down; mark and sew a 2-inch gusset on each. Trim corner to 1/8 inch. Turn again so lining faces out; sew a 1/4-inch seam along gussets to finish seams. Turn right side out one last time.
6. Apply a bead of fabric glue to metal frame. Center over top seam, carefully insert fabric in metal frame, and secure in place with tape. Allow glue to set for several hours.
7. Remove tape, tuck outside corners behind frame, and snap closed.
Personalized Label
Tools and Materials
- Computer with program for designing labels
- Inkjet printer
- Jacquard Inkjet printable silk
- Iron
- Steam-a-Seam double-sided fusible interfacing
- Scissors or rotary cutter
Label How-To
1. Create labels in an 8 1/2-by-11-inch document using any program that generates images, words, letters, etc.
2. With an inkjet printer, print document on silk side of printable silk page. Let ink set for 15 minutes.
3. Carefully peel off paper backing from silk and discard. Place sheet on flat surface and gently reshape. Apply Steam-a-Seam double-sided fusible interfacing to wrong side of silk with a warm iron.
4. Cut labels from sheet. Peel off paper backing, and iron labels in place on handmade items.

OMGCrafts.com ships to Canada and has tons of purse making supplies and the glue mentioned.
I cannot find Bond 527 Multi-Purpose Cement in Canada and do not want to order online unless completely necessary- which glue would anyone recommend to replace the Bond 527 Multi-Purpose Cement, that will still hold well? Does it have to be the cement? Could I use super glue? Thanks!
Yes, I ship purse frames to Canada! Please contact me via Etsy please. www.upstyle.etsy.com

Soooooo cute! I can't wait to try to make one of these..... if I can manage to get the clutch hardware mailed to Canada :) Robin can you help?

Sure it is! Beacon had that off the market only for a short time but brought the same great formula back after much demand. The just renamed it. The same great formula is now called Beacon Multi-Use glue. I love it and wouldn't be without it in my sewing room. Heck, even Martha recommends it : )
Hello Clutch Makers! The Bond 527 Multi-Purpose Cement listed in this article is no longer available. I've been experimenting with alternatives and found a non-toxic glue that is readily available at most craft stores, inexpensive, easy to use with my clutch frames, and creates a permanent bond as strong as anything I have tried. Contact me for more information. www.upstyle.etsy.com Thanks! Robin

Wow! You're really milking this Martha site for all its worth aren't you Robin? Has this become your personal ad space? Isn't it enough that you are spamming clutch makers all over Etsy trying to make a buck off of your competitors (other clutch makers). Aren't you embarrassed to have ripped off all of your customers by drastically overcharging for your frames just because you were on this show? Now you're changing tactics and trying to undercut longstanding purse frame sellers. No class.
My NEW Frames are arriving TODAY! Lots of new STYLES and FINISHES available and on sale NOW. See them on my site www.upstyle.etsy.com Thanks so much ~ Robin

Hi All, Just want to let everyone know that not all clutch frames work with this method of making modern style clutches. The open channel at the top needs to be large enough for all of the layers. Contact me for more info www.upstyle.etsy.com
Thanks! Robin
Nice! I found these frames at www.AmericanPurseSupplies.com They have a different tutorial and method for making them. I bought them and loved the quality. All of their frames are excellent quality though.
I have lots of frames still available for sale on my website - www.upstyle.etsy.com - If you don't see what you are looking for just send me a message and I'll respond ASAP. Thank you! Robin

Thanks ..
I'm not sure if my previous post made it through....Is it okay to sell these? I have some friends interested in buying these from me.
One last thing! Frame orders are in stock now to be shipped within 48 hours of purchase. Available in quantities of 1, 5, and 10. Contact me for a custom order of any other quantity. Thanks so much! Robin
Hi All - Although there are similar purse frames available elsewhere online they must be the right style, size, correct channel size, etc. in order for this project to be successful. Feel free to contact me anytime for more information ~ Happy New Year! Robin
Frames for this Fabric Clutch project are currently available on my site www.upstyle.etsy.com ON SALE NOW! Quantity discounts available. Please contact me for more information. Thanks! Robin
The frame is 6 3/4 inches wide
What size frame are you using in this video?
Hi! The fabric needs to be a medium weight cotton or cotton blend fabric. A thin fabric doesn't have enough body for it to have any structure and a heavy thick fabric won't fit into the channel of the frame. I use Pellon Craft-fuse for the stabilizer and Pellon Thermolam Plus Fusible Fleece. Contact me directly at www.upstyle.etsy.com for more info. Thanks! Robin
I made one of these last night and love, love love it! I hope to make a few more for quick x-mas presents. However, my question is how you make the base stiff? In the video they seem so stiff and mine definitely smooshes when you put it under your arm. Do you recommend putting something in the bottom? Or? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Happy Holidays Everyone! I've just received a new shipment of GOLD finish frames. They are gorgeous! Perfect to compliment your gold jewelry. Frame orders will be shipped out within 1 business day. Contact me for more information. www.upstyle.etsy.com Thanks! Robin
Also, please keep in mind that prices listed elsewhere may be stated in currencies other than US Dollars. Shipping may be more as well. Be well informed. Thanks! Robin
Hi All - Although there are similar purse frames available elsewhere online they must be the right size, correct channel size, etc. in order for this project to be successful. You may need to re-design the pattern or invent a new sewing method for it to work.
HI everyone, I found the right frame for this project online at www.u-handbag.com they flat rate ship all over the world :)
It's the right frame, with just a channel at the top, nothing at the sides. http://www.u-handbag.com/index.php?main_page=product_info
demia - the ones from 3dpaper that you would want, if you decide to buy from that seller, are the ones like this : http://www.etsy.com/listing/62607954/8-inch-metal-purse-frame-for-clutch. They are the ones that only have the channels on the tops, not the sides. I bought mine from that seller, and they've worked great.
Thanks Robin. I will email you at the website. Deb (bookladyma): did you ever see if the fish tail frames worked? Hope it all worked well.
Happy Holidays! The link above to purse hardware and kits take you to sold out listings. I just received a HUGE shipment of frames. Visit my website: www.upstyle.etsy.com, click on the link on the left that says "kits frames patterns" to see all the listings. Contact me for special requests. Robin

or this one? http://www.etsy.com/listing/62826944/7inch-nickel-rectangle-purse-frame-...
Hi, which size of clutch frame is featured in this video? I see that you have quite a few frames on the website so can you please post a link to which one was on the video? Also do you ship to the UK?
Has anyone tried this frame? http://www.u-handbag.com/index.php?main_page=product_info
Hi, which size of clutch frame is featured in this video? I see that you have quite a few frames on the website so can you please post a link to which one was on the video? Also do you ship to the UK?
NEW frames now available for a smaller clutch. Comes with full instructions, list of materials needed, important tips. Contact Robin for more info - www.upstyle.etsy.com
Hello All! The resource links above direct you to sold listings. I have LOTS of frames available on my site www.upstyle.etsy.com Look under the category "Kits Frames Patterns" on the left of the screen. If you don't find what you are looking for, just send me a note via Etsy. Thanks! Robin
Hello Crafters, Other vendors sell similar frames but the channel across the top needs to be the right size in order for the fabric to fit properly inside. Also, some frames are made so that they are pinched in at the sides. Again, the fabric won't fit properly. Please contact me for more information. Thanks! Robin www.upstyle.etsy.com
I also found these frames on Etsy at 3Dpatternpaper for $5 each - you probably pay a higher shipping cost since it is from Hong Kong, but that is much cheaper per frame. Robin didn't have hers listed when I first looked on her site last night after seeing this on Lisa Lam's blog. So I shopped around Etsy and found these which should be the correct frames as they only have the channels on the top, not the sides.
Yes, I do sell just the frames! They are available in quantities of 1, 5, and 10. Looks under the category of Kits Frames Patterns for all listings. Kits are also available with fabric and inner layers. See my site www.upstyle.etsy.com
Thanks! Robin
Yes, I do sell just the frames! The kit includes fabric and inner layers, also available. But frames are available in quantities of 1, 5, and 10 frames. Two styles, two finishes. www.upstyle.etsy.com
I went to her site and she doesn't sell just the frame. You actually have to buy the whole kit from her. I tried to find a similar frame online, but can't seem to find one. I was trying to keep my gifts this year inexpensive, but I think I'll have to try something different.
Bummer! Tried to save money by buying frames from a different vendor, twice. Either the fabrics too thick to fit or won't get into the outside corners.
Save your money and time, get your frames from upstyle.
One last thing! Gold frames now back in stock. Contact me for more information.
www.upstyle.etsy.com - Thank you all! Robin
Frames for this Fabric Clutch project are currently available on my site www.upstyle.etsy.com ON SALE NOW! Quantity discounts available.
Please contact me for more information. Thanks! Robin
Hi All! Just want to let everyone know that other internet sites do not sell the frames that work with this project. The proportions and instructions only work with the frames I sell on my site www.upstyle.etsy.com.
I've found a great site where you can buy the purse frames, It's called U-Handbag (www.u-handbag.com), and they also have loads of other great bag making stuff!
I can't wait to make up this cute frame purse, I've got a wedding to go to in the spring and this will be perfect :D Thanks Martha!
Gold Frames available again! Silver frames on SALE now! www.upstyle.etsy.com Please contact me for quantity discounts.

Hello all! Just wanted to let you all know I have new shipments of all of my frames. Available on my site www.upstyle.etsy.com. Keep in mind not all frames work with this project. Channels are either too narrow for layers of fabric or not the right size. Contact me for more information. Robin
Thanks Deb! Good luck with the project!
I just got my frames today so I'm going to try the slightly larger size. It seems like there is a little extra in her sizing but I may add a half inch to the width just in case - I'll let you know how it goes :-) Deb
Deb, have you tried with the project with the frame you link to? I ask because this frame is 3/8" wider than the Upstyle frame of 6 and 3/4". I definitely need a less expenseive option for a frame that will work. Thanks for the feedback!
Visit this wholesaler for a better price http://www.etsy.com/listing/55776771/18cm-7-18-inch-fancy-fish-tail-bead
It's the channel at the top of the frame that makes it's right for this project. Deb
this project doesn't even mention the size Metal clutch frame to use? how would we know what size to buy?
Hello All! I just found out my Clutch Project is the Craft of the Day! Just so everyone knows, other Etsy sellers (including whilebabynaps) DO NOT sell the frames that work with this project. For more information, contact me at www.upstyle.etsy.com Thanks! Robin
thank you so much DogGuardian! That is a wonderful site as I couldnt make out all that Martha's guest did.
Martha- I would love it if you could post the name
Folks, I've sewn handbags for many years. I notice that there's another good and reasonably priced etsy source of handbag frames by a NJ seller, "WhileBabyNaps": http://www.etsy.com/shop/whilebabynaps
I've also found the U-handbag website very helpful, including several free patterns and clear directions: http://www.u-handbag.com/
FYI I am not related to either of these folks - just wanted to provide alternatives.

Hi Everyone! Some of my Make-It-Yourself Clutch Kits are now on sale! 20% Off for a limited time only. Frames are also available. See my website for more info. www.upstyle.etsy.com
I am not computer savvy, I was wondering if there is someone that can help me get started on making my label via Microsoft Word? Thanks
Has anyone found a purse frame that actually works beyond the one from Upstyle? If you have would you mind sharing where you got it from.
New Kits available now on my site! www.upstyle.etsy.com
Thanks! Robin

Click the tab that says "Purse Kits and Frames". If you want to buy multiples, just ask for a quantity discount. I'll set up a custom listing for you.
Has anyone made a clutch yet? I'd love to see photos. Contact me via Etsy.
The directions don't tell you what size of frame you need, does anyone know?
Robin, I really liked this project. Could you let the rest of us crafters know where you get the frames for the clutches. I'm having a hard time finding them at a reasonable price. Thanks tertack
Help! I made some cute silk labels for my project using the recommended inkjet printing silk but I'm having a problem ironing on the fusible interfacing. The heat of the iron (on the silk setting) is too hot for the silk and at a lower temp, won't get the interfacing to bond to the silk! Ideas?
Thanks Robin. It came out really well!
Hi, when you lay your fabric out, the longer side runs horizontally. The first 1/2" seams are along the top and bottom of the fabric. Make sense? Robin
I'm a little confused about the length and width of the fabric. Is the longer side (13.5 in) along the top or the sides?
This is the link to kits and frames: http://www.etsy.com/shop/Upstyle?section_id=6984531
Hi Everyone! It's Robin from UPSTYLE again. Many of you have contacted me regarding availability of the frames and kits. The links metioned above are old ones that have been sold out. Here is a link to all my kits and frames. Please contact me through www.upstyle.etsy.com if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks! Robin
Does anyone know what sized frame you need?
Hi all! Please be carefull purchasing your frames online. The frames sold on ahkwokbuckles are not the right size for the demo I did with Martha. Either too large or too small. Robin
Does anyone have a catalog number for the clutch frame hardware from ahkwokbuckles.com?
I saw this project on Martha's show and instantly fell in love with it. To look at the purse you would think it would be difficult to make, but It really looks like it will be easy. I am going to try it. I will be looking at the website for the handle part.
By the way, Martha is awesome!
One last thing. There are other frames available out there with channels across the top only but some of them are pinched at the outside edges making it impossible to insert the fabric. I know because I have a big box of these that just don't work. I want everyone's project to be successful. Contact me with any concerns. www. upstyle.etsy.com. Thanks! Robin
I know of only one wholesale vendor I buy them from. These frames are available on my site. www. upstyle.etsy.com. At $15, it may seem pricey but it covers the frame, free shipping, and instructions including dozens of tips I wasn't able to mention on the show because of time. It took months of making bags to figure out all the things that can go wrong. It's a deal. Believe me.
It's Robin from Upstyle again. It's a bummer that most of the frames available online are the ones I call the "classic design". I sell bags in this style as well. The channel runs along the top and down both sides. It's a whole other method of making bags. But the frame that works with my simple method that I demonstrated with Martha needs a different frame with a channel across the top. See next message.
Thanks for sharing that site. Do you know if the sides can be removed from that frame? I found similiar ones but they also have the side frames which if you use the instrucions from the show may not work.
I just found the purse frames for even cheaper than www.umei.com which I had first commented about. I found them at ahkwokbuckles.com and you can get 5 frames for $16 which breaks down to only $3.20 per frame. Awesome deal, and who really only wants to make one anyway.
It's Robin from Upstyle again. The clutch I demonstrated with Martha only works with one particular type of purse frame. Be careful when buying from other vendors. Most clutch frames available online have channels that wrap around the sides and along the top. The method I demonstrated only works with frames with channels across the top. Good luck! Robin
Hello Everyone! I'm Robin from Upstyle. Just wanted to let everyone know frames are available on my site. Just click the "Purse Kit" section and you'll see all that are available. Just added a gold-tone frame! Really pretty. I'll be adding a few new styles soon. If you don't see what you want, just send me a message. I'll get back to you ASAP. Good luck with your clutches! Robin

I sell kits as well as nickel-free metal purse frames and Gutermann glue needed to glue it to the frame. My shop is http://whilebabynaps.etsy.com
I dont know this seller on etsy but they look similar, nice quality and reasonable price:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/45772274/set-of-10-8-in-x-3-in-nickel-free-m...
Robin's Etsy shop is sold out and has been since this morning. I couldn't find them on Umei.com. The search goes on.....
The entire episode will be on FLN saturday morning. I already set my DVR so I can see it again.
I checked youtube and don't see the video there on how to make the clutch shown here. Has anyone been able to find the video on the internet?
I just ordered 3 frames off of umei.com and the product is HF8038. $5.50 a piece gold or nickel. This site is poorly designed. Look for purse frames. Some are discontinued, when I called he told me what was in stock.
Does anyone know where I can find the Jacquard Inkjet printable silk to make the labels?
Metal clutch frame hardware is available at Robin's Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/listing/45689696/purse-frame-only-as-seen-on-the-martha
It took me a while, but I found them at www.umei.com. You have to do some searching on their site, but I did just find them there and from the picture they look exactly the same. They sell for $5.50 a piece. Hope this helps. Can't wait to make my own! Good luck.
I also spent hours searching the internet for the clutch handle and cannot find it. I hate it when this happens. I live in a small town so I need to be able to find these things online. What a bummer!
I got interupted during the demo. How can I see the video again?
After hours on the internet looking for the exact clasp I haven't found it. There are many clasps at her site but not the one she uses. The one she uses just gets glued to the top edge of the fabric. All the ones I've seen on the internet have sides to the frames. if anyone has a source for the exact metal frame please post it. I would love to make these for a bridal shower favor. Thank you....
This one could use the video of the making of it from the show. It looked so simple watching it via video.
Hardware can be found at Walmart, JoAnn's, etc.

Agree with the others, the purse is great but where do you buy the metal frame? Robins site only sells the kits, I only want the frames.
The purse is lovely, my question is what size is the metal frame??? also, could you give me the name of the wholesaler you use. Thank you

Beautiful, simply beautiful. But, what size is the metal clutch frame hardware? They mentioned that she had them for sale on her website, but it's actually a kit which includes the fabric. A source for the hardware would be a help.
