Baby Wooden Blocks
Martha and crafter Ashley Steele make one-of-a-kind wooden blocks.
Make these adorable baby blocks from crafter Ashley Steele for your child, and they'll be the coolest kid on the block.
3 1/4-inch square wood block
Sandpaper
Scissors
Acrylic paint
Mod Podge
Paintbrush
Decorative paper
Emery board
Letters, numbers, and embellishments
Sponge
1. Sand the wooden block with sandpaper to prepare it for painting.
2. Paint the block with the color you've selected. Allow to dry.
3. Cut 6 pieces of decorative paper to 3 1/4 inch.
4. Glue the paper to each side of the block using all-purpose Mod Podge. Allow the glue to dry.
5. Sand edges and corners of paper with an emery board.
6. Paste the letters, numbers, and embellishments to the block using the same technique.
7. Sponge the edges of the paper with paint to give it texture and an antique look.
8. Paint another coat of Mod Podge all over the block to seal. Allow to dry.
You can purchase the decorative paper and letters, numbers, and embellishments at Basic Grey Paper. Special thanks to Basic Grey Paper for giving everyone in our studio audience a package of their designer paper. For all other tools and materials, please visit hiccupinc.com or crafts stores.

You can use shellac to make them drool-proof. Shellac is commonly used on wood toys.
I just purchased 2 1/2 inch wooden blocks for this project from www.caseyswood.com, and they are perfect. Incredibly smooth, great quality, would highly recommend. Nancy
These are absolutely adorable! I ended up just buying a wood plank and they cut it free for me into 3inch squares. So for $15 I got 26 squares. worth it! made adorable baby shower decor!
Where can I buy the blocks??? I can't seem to find anything even close to this size. Please help.
I would like to make these for my niece. However, she's teething and I'm afraid that she'll put the blocks in her mouth! Does anyone know if Mod Podge is harmful to babies in that way?
Skulls are in style and it isn't like this one is scary at all. It's simple....if you don't like skulls, don't put them on the ones you make=)
I agree with elenamarie! Besides, why do baby items always have to be sweet?
I disagree with HeatherMD,skulls are notalways morbid. In the Mexican culture we celebrate Dia de los Muertos, and it actually teachers our children to be close to relatives that may have passed away and continue to celebrate their lives. My son is not afraid of skulls
This project looks great. But Martha, in the photo you have a skull and crossbones baby block--that's morbid and not in character with the sweet Martha baby ideas you usually have.
Some people are just so recourceful!!! Love it-- and her darling kid and dogs! I wish they would move to where I live so we could hang out! She seems like so muchfun!
super cute! What a great idea!
I purchased the kit from Asley Steele, via Etsy website-hiccup decor, and it is lovely. Ashley is VERY helpful

can anyone tell me where to buy the wooden blocks? i live in md and can't seem to find them. i checked michaels but they don't seem to carry them. i would really appreciate any suggestions-thanks!!
I love this project. I have adapted it to all types of kid's room decor. I try letter to hang on the wall, bold plaques, a great use for all that beautiful paper on the scrap booking isle! Also great for other areas in the house
I love this, I see Christmas gifts for granddaughters. Off the subject a wee bit, am I the only one who finds the advertising on the right side annoying annoying and distracting, I'm referring to the one that moves around, the "trysensa" I opened the page in the print preview function so I could read it and not have to deal with it. But haven't found a way to watch the video and not have it there.
Has anyone tried something other than Modge Podge? My experience was that it yellowed the white paper I applied it to (on a ceramic tile). Thanks!
These are cool to make using kid's photos printed onto regular paper. Enlarge to fit a set of 9 blocks, cut to fit blocks and make it a puzzle. Or use a drawing one of the kids did. Use the original or scan and print it. Since a block has 6 sides, you could do 6 different drawings or photos or a combination. What a GREAT project that would be. DETS
I am totally in love with these! I'm trying to devise a "grown-up" version so I can decorate MY room! Also, Ashley's website and Etsy shop are delightful.
I LOVED this project! I made these for a double baby shower, and the mamas to be loved them. They were the hit of the party. So easy to do and so personal. I like giving things that I have made as gifts. So cute I want some for myself-cute in the craft room. Thank you!!!!
I can't wait to try this especially since I found scraps of 4X4's in my storage shed... how fortuitous is that?
Photos would be great and would really personalize the project...thanks for the suggestion.
I like the wooden blocks- how about adding pictures to them I like to have a picture of mommy, daddy or baby. They also make great paper weights by adding a picture to every side.
Where do you find the wooden blocks for this? A lumber yard?
I made these and had a BLAST doing it. I posted my blocks at www.thegauge.typepad.com
Can't wait to make more - there are so many possibilities.
Ooop! I accidentally tried to buy these cool blocks from the wrong company! In case anyone else was confused from the show--Basic Grey is the paper company, not the company that makes and sells the crafts. You can buy the blocks, and the other crafts shown on the show, from Ashley's Steel's company, Hiccup Inc, at www.hiccupinc.com.
Video of the segments is posted the day after the segment airs, at 6 P.M. EST.
The link (which will say "Video") will be posted on the photo of the wooden blocks.
I wish I would have seen this instead - I didn't want to see the pope.
