Family Costumes: Woodland Creatures

Introduction

Earth-tone knit clothing is the foundation for an enchanted forest of walking, talking flora and fauna. The foliage on the sapling and big trees is made from felt and cotton fabric, floral wire, and floral tape.

Materials

  • Iron
  • 4-by-6-inch fusible web
  • Green felt
  • 18-gauge wire
  • 24-gauge floral wire
  • Scissors
  • Floral tape
  • Patterned cotton fabric
  • For mushroom: fabric glue
  • For mushroom: sewing kit

Steps

  1. Step 1

To create a leaf, iron 4-by-6-inch fusible web to same size green felt to fuse.

  2. Step 2

Center a length of 24-gauge floral wire on web; top with patterned cotton fabric. Iron layers together; cut into a leaf shape. Wrap wire in floral tape.

  3. Step 3

To create a branch, cut an 8- to 10-inch piece of 18-gauge wire. Wrap in floral tape, adding leaves as you go. Attach branches to headband by wrapping ends in place with floral tape, using multiple layers for a woody look.

  4. Step 4

Each side of hat (front and back) is made of two pieces of felt joined with fusible web. Use cross-stitches to tack hat together and to size it to child's head at bottom. Attach felt spots with fabric glue.
