Magnetic Calendar Board

This clever organizational idea enables you to plan ahead for the month's activities. Because the calendar is magnetic, you can easily update it when the month changes.

Tools and Materials
Magnetic bulletin board, 24 by 24 inches
See-through grid ruler
#2 pencil
Ruler
Removable label stickers, such as Avery, in 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheets
Utility knife
Toothpicks or wooden coffee stirrer
2-inch masking tape
Appliance epoxy spray paint
Magnetic sheets, such as those made by Xerox
Magnetic Wall Calendar Templates
Erasable marker, such as the Fabercastel Dry-Erase Marker

Magnetic Calendar Board How-To
1. Draw horizontal lines on the bulletin board using the see-through grid ruler and the #2 pencil: Measure down 5 inches from the top edge, and draw a line across. Draw four more lines below at 3-inch intervals. Draw vertical lines by marking along the top and bottom lines at the board's midpoint. Draw a line from top to bottom. Measure out from this line in each direction, and draw a line from top to bottom every 3 inches.

2. To create 2 1/2-inch squares for the days of the week, take a stack of four-label sheets, and use the see-through grid and the utility knife to cut the sheet into 2 1/2-inch strips. Mark the midpoint of each strip, and draw a line down the center. Stack the strips, and cut them the other way at 2 1/2-inch intervals, creating 2 1/2-inch squares. Adhere the stickers to the board, lining up the top of the sticker to the top line of each row and matching up the centerlines. You should end up with five vertical rows of seven boxes in each row.

3. Use the masking tape, folding it over each side of the bulletin board to mask off a 1-inch border. Make sure the stickers are completely affixed to the surface. Working in a well-ventilated area, spray on a coat of the spray paint. Once the paint is dry, use a toothpick or wooden coffee stirrer to remove the stickers. Remove the masking tape.

4. Print out the downloadable template on the magnetic sheets. Using a ruler, carefully cut out the names of the months, the days of the week, and the special-occasion icons. Position the days of the week in their appropriate spot and the month up top (the other month magnets, as well as the icons, can be stored on the back of the board.) Use the erasable marker to write any information in the appropriate square. Magnetic hooks and clamps can also be used to hold notes or invitations in place.

This is a great idea, though it sure would be nice to be able to see a bigger picture of the finished project.
