Hardware Cloth Snowflake Ornament

Some of the most distinctive holiday ornaments are those made from unexpected materials. This ornament, a snowflake whose symmetry resembles the grid of a crossword puzzle, is created with wire mesh, glue, and glitter. Use the template below to help you shape the wire.

Materials

  • Hardware Cloth Ornament Template
  • Hardware cloth wire mesh, 1/2 inch grid
  • Paint marker
  • Wire cutters
  • Jeweler's pliers or needle-nose pliers
  • Sponge brush
  • Craft glue
  • Glass glitter
  • Metallic thread

Steps

  1. Step 1

Print out the template, and lay the hardware cloth on top. Using the paint marker, mark off the wires you will cut to achieve the proper shape. Cut away the wire with the wire cutters, and bend the sharp points over using the pliers.

  2. Step 2

Using the sponge brush, cover both sides of a portion of the snowflake with glue. Sprinkle glass glitter over the snowflake, covering both sides. Continue until the entire snowflake is covered with glitter. String the ornament using the metallic thread.

I created with mine with a slightly smaller hardware cloth mesh. Was a little tricky coming up with the pattern but the result is quite ornate.
