Punched Floral Barrettes

Constructed out of fabric-punched blooms, flowering hair clips are the perfect way to brighten up Mom's day.

Constructed out of fabric-punched blooms, flowering hair clips are the perfect way to brighten up Mom's day.

1. Begin by punching fabric flowers: Lay a piece of fabric in a shallow tray. With a medium paintbrush, apply enough fabric stiffener to saturate, but not soak, the fabric. Let it dry, about 1 hour. Repeat with any remaining fabric.

2. Using craft punches, punch out petals and leaves as close together on the fabric as possible.

3. Using a micro hole punch, make a hole in the center of each bloom. Slip a pip through each hole, and secure it with a dab of contact cement.

4. Hand-stitch flowers to bobby pin or comb.

5. Secure the back side of the stitch with contact cement. For an extra-special presentation, insert the hairpins through holes made in a large punched leaf.

Here is another cool leaf idea, that I found on line. The TickleMe Plant is the only Mother's Day Plant that will closes its leaves when you Tickle It.
With the TickleMe Plant Gift Box set Mom can easily grow a pet like plant that closes its leaves and even lower its branches when Tickled.
It is a great alternative to Rose and adult TickleMe Plant can produce sparkling Pink flowers. See video.

Hi Dragonswing: Have you tried poking thru with a large headed sewing needle.... like a darning needle??? It will leave a [filtered word] large enough to get your center pips thru, but not tooo large to make it an unsightly [filtered word]. I use a scrapbooking punch tool which is 1/16"...... it is perfect for putting brads thru or for the pips for these types of flower projects. Good Luck.

I think if you use a fabric stiffener as opposed to starch that you will have an easier time of it. There is a difference. Good Luck!

Does anyone know what punches were used? Are they even Martha Stewart punches?! The blue one is a Martha Stewart punch, but what about the yellow and red ones? Those are my favorite!

I'd like to know how you get the fabric to punch. I have tried different weights of fabrics, tried starching them and ironing, but all I get is either a jammed punch or a ripped [filtered word] in the fabric.
