Light Fixture Glossary

Martha Stewart Living, June 2006

The experts at Greenwich Metal Finishing, in Stamford, Connecticut, created light fixtures for my property in Bedford. The components were made individually, custom-painted, and pieced together by hand.

1.Ten-inch shade
Handblown from milk glass, this shade is lovely and luminous -- even when the light is off.

2.Clear incandescent lightbulb
A clear bulb with a visible filament has a vintage look that works with these fixtures.

3.Metal fitter
This was custom-created to accommodate the glass shade.

4.Steel mounting arm
There's a hand-turned decorative neck at each end. This arm is L shaped; others are goosenecked.

5. Five-inch mounting plate
The back of this flat plate was hollowed out to fit the electrical box. In the same color as the room, the plate seems to disappear.Handblown from milk glass, this shade is lovely and luminous -- even when the light is off.
