Decorating a Table

Martha Stewart Living, May 1998

A cake that's pretty enough to serve as a centerpiece is made with crystallized Johnny-jump-ups, Viola tricolor, on a trellis of buttercream. This white grid was piped with a #2 round tip over a smooth coating of lavender buttercream.

Pots of pansies make versatile cake decorations. Here, 'Imperial Antique Shades' and 'Faces Apricot' are clustered to the together on an outdoor sideboard, ready to be transferred to the table alongside the cakes or to be brought indoors to brighten any room in the house.
