Monogrammed Tea Cozy
SourceMartha Stewart Living Television
If you put in the effort to make the perfect pot of tea -- warming the teapot, using fresh tea leaves, and steeping them for just the right amount of time -- be sure to keep the tea warm enough for second helpings. A tea cozy will allow you to enjoy your well-made brew in a leisurely fashion.
Our tea cozy was made to fit a standard-size teapot. To customize our template, simply enlarge or reduce it to fit your teapot. This cozy is made of several layers to ensure proper insulation: You'll need two felt semicircles for the exterior, four semicircles for the lining, and two semicircles of bump (also known as English table flannel).
This tea cozy project also makes a wonderful gift, especially when it's personalized with a monogram. To create a monogram, select either your initials or a friend's.
- Kraft paper
- Felt (2 colors)
- Thin cardboard
- Tailor's chalk
- Utility knife
- Self-healing cutting mat
- Glass-headed pins
- Fabric glue
- Pinking shears
Step 1 of 8
Use the provided template, which will make a 16-by-11-inch tea cozy, or create your own. Trace three templates onto kraft paper: one for exterior of the tea cozy, one for the lining, and one for the bump.
Step 2 of 8
Using tailor's chalk, trace the semicircle pattern for the exterior onto fabric, and cut out two semicircles. Trace the semicircle pattern for the lining onto fabric, and cut out four semicircles. Trace the semicircle pattern for the bump onto bump fabric-thick off-white unbleached flannel-and cut out two semicircles.
Step 3 of 8
Center bump between two layers of lining fabric, and pin the lining together with glass-headed pins. Machine-baste around the arc, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance; leave the bottom open. Repeat.
Step 4 of 8
Pin the two sides of lining together. Measure 2 inches up from the bottom on each side, and mark; use a zipper foot to stitch around the arc from mark to mark, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Trim seam allowance to 1/4 inch.
Step 5 of 8
To make a monogram, select your initials from our pattern, and make a stencil on a thin piece of cardboard (you can also make your own pattern). Turn the stencil over, and trace it on the fabric in reverse, so pencil marks won't be visible on the outside of the tea cozy. Place the fabric on a self-healing cutting mat, and use a utility knife and a ruler to cut out the monogram.
Step 6 of 8
Apply fabric glue to the back of the monogram. Match up the bottom of the lining with the bottom of the exterior pieces, and sandwich the lining between the exterior pieces.
Step 7 of 8
To make a tab, cut a 4-by-3/8-inch strip of contrasting fabric; fold in half, and pin inside the top of the cozy, centered above the monogram. Pin the fabric pieces together around the arc, leaving about 3 inches open on each end so you can stitch together the bottom edges.
Step 8 of 8
Using a zipper foot again, stitch the lining and the exterior together across the bottom edges. Sew around the arc, stitching in the tab at the top. Use pinking shears to finish the edge of the arc.
