Color Washing the Potting Shed

Introduction

To remedy this problem, Tom Eberharter, of the Martha Stewart Living Style department, uses a simple technique -- color washing -- which he demonstrates on a set of cedar cabinets in Martha's potting shed.

Materials

  • Glazing liquid
  • Flat latex paint
  • Paint stirrer
  • Paintbrushes
  • Polyurethane varnish

Steps

  1. Step 1

In a bucket, mix 1 part glazing liquid, 1 part paint, and 2 parts water. Stir well with a paint stirrer.

  2. Step 2

Paint a clean, untreated wooden surface with the color wash, applying a liberal coat so that it soaks into the pores of the wood. Avoid letting the paint drip; the drips will show, and adding a second coat to hide them will produce an effect that's too opaque. Let dry.

  3. Step 3

Seal with a coat of varnish.
