How-To

Machine-Embroidered Felt Coasters

You only need tiny bits of fabric and some colorful thread to make these machine-embroidered coasters, which make lovely housewarming and hostess gifts. Simply machine embroider squares of wool felt to make straight and zigzag designs; both stitches are standard on any sewing machine.

Tools and Materials

  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine
  • Wool felt in one or more colors, cut into 5-inch squares
  • Ruler
  • Disappearing-ink pen

How-To
1. On each square of felt, use a disappearing-ink fabric pen and ruler to mark a design in a grid.

2. Machine-stitch along the markings, one row at a time.

Thanks for the thought about color fastness. I'm going to try this craft, but will test a small piece of felt first.

BoopaCA - many thanks - I had the same concern! I wonder if fleece would work as well?

Unless the fabric is color-fast, it might 'bleed' if moisture from the drinking glass soaks it; thus, possibly staining the surface it's on.
