Costumes with Wings

A basic pair of wings can serve as the basis for many different costumes.

Materials

Steps

  1. Step 1

Download and enlarge bat wings template, fairy wings template, or dragonfly wings template; trace onto kraft paper.

  2. Step 2

Wrap 18-gauge steel wire with black tape.

  3. Step 3

Bend wire into 3-D shape. First form top shape, then the bottom with another length of wire.

  4. Step 4

Join top and bottom shapes with a piece of duct tape.

  5. Step 5

Cut a leg off panty hose. Slide over bottom of one wing. Pull taut and tie a knot in the back of wire structure.

  6. Step 6

Repeat for bottom of other wing, then tops of wings.

  7. Step 7

Using colored Halloween "hair spray," spray both wings black.

  8. Step 8

Glue on plastic gems to back and front of wings.

  9. Step 9

To make the harness, one by one, sew the ends of a foot of clear elastic to the front of the knot in middle of wings.

  10. Step 10

Follow the same process as butterfly costume, except step 6. Tie off both top and bottom of wings. Then, use follow rest of process, using white Halloween hair spray for step 7.

If you want to make the bat wings buy panty hose or knee highs labeled queen size. I got some wild colors where you can buy hair extensions and wigs they were very cheap. The bat pattern makes great dragon wings to.

I have made these wings before I saw them on this show. I used acrylic paint and watered it down a little. You just have to use your own judgment on how much water to use.

how flame resistant is this once its all finished? The hair coloring I thought was very flammable and was wondering if their are alternatives or a flame retardent spray of some sort....Anyone?

i would not recommend using the bat template as I could not pull tights over the wire shape without destroying the shape I had created.

I hope to make these for my girls dressing as fairies this year. However, I wish the video showed part 1 to see how the wings are put together from the beginning.
