Sparkling Wine

Everyday Food, Volume 8 December 2003

This good and inexpensive alternative to French Champagne is just right for the holidays or any day that calls for a celebration.

Where Does It Come From?
Sparkling wine is made in France, Italy, Spain, and the United States (California and New York), among other places.

How Does It Taste?
Although some people feel that sparkling wine doesn't have the cachet of Champagne, these wines can be just as crisp, creamy, fruity, and bubbly.

What Foods Go With It?
It's often served with the usual cheese and crackers, olives, and other hors d'oeuvres. But it also pairs well with spicy and fried foods, or desserts and fruits.

How Much Does It Cost?
Whereas a good bottle of Champagne can cost $50, an equally tasty sparkling wine can run anywhere from $10 to $30.
