Project

Glove Animals

Introduction

Craft expert and editor Meg Leder joins Martha in the studio to make these adorable animals from simple pairs of socks and gloves -- the basis of a great how-to book, "Sock and Glove," by Miyako Kanamori, which was first published in Japan.

Download the detailed step-by-step instructions and photographs for the bunny and dog, so you, too, can make these adorable glove animals.

Resources: More information on the glove animals and other craft ideas form Miyako Kanamori can be found in her book, "Sock and Glove," which was given to our studio audience by Penguin Group. Special thanks to Meg Leder for showing us this wonderful craft.

I once lived in Florida (rotorpilot)...and I could always count on TARGET to have cheap and colorful gloves. Don't forget to check the kids clothing sections as well as the adult departments.

  • 26 Feb, 2009

Does anyone know where I can get the cute little gloves they are using for this project? I live in Florida and don't have any gloves.

  • 18 Nov, 2008

These are very easy to make. Each animal has its own character when finished.
I have many of them with ease.

  • 23 Oct, 2008

The written instructions are different than the video ones. The video says to cut off both middle fingers for the head but the written directions say to cut off the middle finger and baby finger... kind of confusing-very adorable nonetheless =)

  • 26 Sep, 2008

The directions are not nearly detailed enough. The leave out how to do the chin. :(

  • 13 Sep, 2008

I'm sooo excited to make these!! They look so cute, i hope i can make them look just as good!

  • 10 Jul, 2008

very easy and very cute. I made the bunny last night to see how it would come out. Now all 4 of my girls want their own. I added a few embellishments. Makes a great gift or the perfect lovie for a child.

  • 20 Jun, 2008

    how cute is this???

  • 20 Jun, 2008

I found the glove animals on the show today to be extremely cute and looks real easy to make too! I can't wait to buy some gloves to try this. If they are cheap and easy enough, I'd make them for the Phoenix Childrens' Hospital, mmaking some without any button for the real young children. Thank you for sharing thes with me!

  • 21 May, 2008

My 8 year-old daughter made a glove bunny yesterday with just a little of my help. So cute and quick!

  • 8 May, 2008

I loved these sooooooo much, that I purchased the book "Sock and Glove". The book is wonderful for those who prefer step-by-step instructions to follow. Plus, you can personalize each one by giving it personality--different buttons, different stitching, hats, scarves, and so on. Enjoy!

  • 20 Apr, 2008

I can't wait to try these with my nieces.

  • 13 Apr, 2008

I messed up a little but it still turned out adorble! I love it!

  • 5 Apr, 2008

My 12 year old daughter and I made these together. It was a perfect balance of simple and challenging for her. The "funkiness" of the bunnies gave her room to be creative, and make "mistakes" that ended up being positively charming! Our bunnies are adorable.

  • 31 Mar, 2008

Home Depot has the gloves for 2 dollars. I made these with my 6 and 7 year old. I let them sew as best they could, and went over there stitching. I had my 3 year old do the stuffing. So much fun, cute and easy~

  • 28 Mar, 2008

I am not at all a sewing person, but these were so cute, simple and cheap! I got the gloves 12 pair for $4 at Walmart.

  • 26 Mar, 2008

Has anyone found a "trick" for using gloves that do NOT lie flat but rather have adistinct left and right fit? Most colorful gloves I've found are of this type. Alos, any tips on best socks to se?

I loved this show and even ordered the book (which is terrific) after I watched the show. I made the dog first out of gray gloves and am working on a white rabbit. The book has the cutest zebra and elephant in it to make out of socks which are next on my list. Thanks Martha this is such a fun project!!

  • 7 Mar, 2008

I've already made one dog, and workng on my panda. I can't seem to find the right socks for the monkey... any suggestions on where to find the them or is there a specific brand I should be looking for? The store or website would be a great help.

  • 7 Mar, 2008

I am the craft coordinator for my MOPS group. We chose to have the ladies make glove bunnies from your show----with a little encouragement, they finished them in 2 hours! A record time since more then half of the MOPS Moms don't sew at all! They turned out so cute and I think we may have started a new trend in sewing---maybe even a sewing circle for MOPS!!! Love the ideas---keep them coming! Too cute--too easy.

  • 5 Mar, 2008

I made the doggie today and knitted mine a little scarf too and it came out so adorable! It was very easy to make, I used green jersey knit work gloves and the plastic wiggle eyes on mine and used black felt to make spots on him. I ordered the book sock and glove and just got it the other day. Great craft project!

  • 5 Mar, 2008

I have made both of these adorable anilmals. Although I have experimented by making three of each out of many forms of gloves, I finally found the soft cotton gloves that need to be used for this craft. I have to say I love the way mine turned out, I have added other features to make them my own. How cute they are!

  • 3 Mar, 2008

This project took quite a bit longer than I thought it would. The result is great and a lot of fun but I dedicated more time than I'd wanted and don't think I'll be up for making any more without a babysitter:)

  • 3 Mar, 2008

Adding comment again: Down load by left mouse click (LMC) on the words bunny or dog. The instructions will load up in Adobe reader. If you need Adober reader to to Adobe.com and click on the "downloads" open at the top of their page. If you have a problem, try a right mouse click (RMC) and select the option "save target as" . This will allow you to save the file on your computer's hard drive or any location you chose, select save.

  • 28 Feb, 2008
