To make this braided, hip-slung leather belt, we used 20 1/3 yards of leather cord, cut into 3 equal pieces. This will make an 84-inch-long belt; size up or down accordingly.
Tools and Materials
- Round leather cord, 3 mm, in Natural, $10 for a 10 m spool, leathercordusa.com.
How to Make the Leather-Lace Belt
Holding the 3 leather pieces together, bend them in half; tie a knot about 2 inches from the bend, making a loop with 6 strands.
Put the center loop over a coat hook (or a big toe), divide the strands into 3 sections of 2 each, and braid. Near the end, knot to secure. Then knot the individual strands.

I love this! I made mine with hemp and braided fabulous beads into it!
Thank you for the information on 3mm leather lace. I have purchased 1mm and 2mm round lace from Standing Bear's Trading Post (they are 25 yard spools) and might try this with the thinner lace first. http://www.sbearstradingpost.com
sandycord was correct the first time... a 10m spool is not enough for this project. cut in thirds and then folded in half, 10m only makes a 60 inch belt which is not long enough for any grown woman I know to loosly wrap twice and tie around the waist. already paid $14 for the 10m spool shipping, now have to order another 10m! just disapointed with martha stewart site that they couldn't have been more clear on what this project requires so i could have ordered correctly in the first place.
Okay further calculation - I think it should read 10 meters or one spool should do it
Direction sizes are not correct. It says it takes 20 1/3 yards about 61 ft. but a spool of 10 meters of leather would work. Well 10 meters of the leather add up to almost 33 ft. So you would need 2 - 10 meter rolls. This project would be about $20 shipping
That shirt would be so easy to make. Linen is going on sale at the end of the summer, too. Hmmmm.....
Loving the belt, I might just make this one.
LOL...Yeah, thanks, Martha! Love the crafts here.
I'm not too proud to say that I get a lot of my clothes from Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Kohl's, Ross, thrift stores, yard sales, and consignment shops and I get lots of compliments on how I dress :-D
thats crazy for a shirt... I'm lucky if i can afford a $ 5.00 T.shirt LOL
interesting... make your own cute leather belt and you'll save money. because you'll need it for the $300 linen shirt!!! sheesh.
