    Uncorking Wine

    How to use a waiter's friend, in three simple steps:

    1. With the corkscrew's blade, cut the foil under the second lip of the bottle (to prevent foil from falling in).

    2. Center the point of the screw on the cork, and turn firmly to anchor the worm (the spiral).

    3. Turn the screw gently and firmly without pressing down, until the worm is halfway down the cork. Place the lever on the lip of the bottle, and pull up until half the cork is exposed. Turn screw again, until the worm is through the cork, and then pull until the cork is free.

    Potato Salad

    Potatoes make satisfying side dishes in all seasons, summer included. What would a picnic be without potato salad? Opinions on which ingredients are essential to potato salad can vary (maybe your must-include is hard-cooked egg, or diced onion, or sweet pickle relish). Regardless, the starting point must be a basic recipe that promises a good outcome every time. My stripped-down method does just that -- all the salad needs are creative additions to make it your own.

  3. Yogurt on a Stick

    A container of yogurt transformed into an ice pop isn't just a yummy treat for kids -- its lid can catch messy drips. Open a 6-ounce container of fruit yogurt; drain excess liquid, and stir. Add a couple of teaspoons of berries and granola on top, pressing into yogurt a bit. Cut a slit in the lid, just large enough to insert a large craft stick. Put lid back on; insert stick halfway into yogurt. Freeze at least 5 hours. To unmold, dip cup into bowl of warm water.

  4. Heart-Shaped Eggs and Toast

    Why settle for ordinary eggs and toast when you can show your love with this version? 

    Using a 3-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter, remove the center of a thick slice of bread, and toast it. Melt 1 1/2 teaspoons butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Place bread slice in skillet, and cook until underside is lightly browned. Add another 1 1/2 teaspoons butter, and flip bread. Fit cookie cutter, coated with cooking spray, in bread's cutout heart, and crack an egg into cutter. Cover skillet, and cook until egg is set, 2 to 3 minutes. Use tongs to remove cutter. Serve with toasted heart for dipping into yolk.

    Carve a Rack of Lamb

    Once the lamb has finished cooking, let it rest for at least 10 minutes (this will allow the juices to redistribute).

    1. Hold Two Rib Bones 

    To slice each rack into chops, hold the ends of two neighboring rib bones upright at one end of the rack. 

    2. Cut Between the Ribs
