Simple Edging

To protect your garden beds from curious dogs, rambunctious kids, and overzealous lawn mowers, edge the perimeter of the beds with elegant, simple fencing made from crisscrossing strips of 3/8-inch bamboo. Use a hand pruner to cut the bamboo into two-foot lengths. Give the ends sharp points so that they will easily enter the soil by making your cuts at an angle. Insert the bamboo sticks 6 inches apart, so the sticks lean toward each other at about a 45-degree angle, and bind them together with garden twine at the points at which they intersect. Martha uses a simple over-and-under knot, secured by a square knot. Cut off the tops of the bamboo sticks 3 inches above the ties.
