Introduction

"Hampton Bay" wall sconce, builder's sand, white glue, and all tools available from The Home Depot. Shells from available from Shell Horizons. Beacon Quick Grip permanent adhesive available from Amazon.

materials

  • Wall sconce

  • Masking tape

  • White craft glue

  • Builder's sand in bucket or basin

  • Paintbrush

  • Large (about 5-inch) white "baking" scallop shell or other large shell

  • Flat-nosed pliers

  • File

  • Beacon Quick Grip permanent adhesive

  • Mid-size (about 1-inch) shells (we used polished "Cay Cay" and "Pearl Among Pong" shells)

  • Tiny (about 1/4-inch) shells (we used "Venetian Pearls")

steps

  1. Use tape to secure wires out of the way on the back of the sconce.

  2. Add 1/4 cup glue to 1/4 cup builder's sand. Apply mixture to all metal parts of sconce with paintbrush. Sprinkle an additional coat of sand over mixture while still wet. Let dry until hardened, about two to three hours.

  3. Remove the "wings" from the large scallop shell with flat-nose pliers, and file edges until smooth. Use quick-grip permanent adhesive to adhere scallop shell to sconce in front of light socket. Rest sconce on side in sand to hold shell in place until glue completely hardens.

  4. With wall plate flat on work surface, use the same permanent adhesive to adhere a row of polished "Cay Cay" or other mid-size shells along perimeter of wall plate. As each shell is glued, pile sand alongside shell to hold it in place while glue dries.

  5. Keep gluing rows of various types of mid-size shells (we also used "Pearl Among Pong" cone-shape shells) to wall plate and light socket until you are satisfied with the design.

  6. Flood the remaining uncovered areas of the sconce with permanent adhesive, and fill in with tiny shells (we used "Venetian Pearls"). Allow glue on sconce to dry completely overnight, remove tape from wires, and mount on wall.
