Arranging Ranunculuses




You can create a striking arrangement with a cluster of a single type of flower, such as the showy, bowl-shaped ranunculus. Ranunculuses resemble small peonies and produce densely petaled blooms in a range of colors, including white, yellow, orange, red, and pink; they are usually available in late winter and early spring.


  1. Step 1

    When buying them, look for flowers with buds that show color and are about to open. Martha chooses a small vase with a tapered top and fluted mouth to arrange Ranunculus asiaticus, also known as Persian buttercup.

  2. Step 2

    To arrange, begin with a clean vase, fill it with room-temperature water, and add flower food.

  3. Step 3

    Remove any leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent rot and bacterial growth, which shortens bloom life.

  4. Step 4

    Hold the flowers next to the vase to gauge the stems’ desired height before cutting them.

  5. Step 5

    Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife or bypass pruners.

  6. Step 6

    Change the water every couple of days, adding flower food each time.
