Wool sachets filled with spoonfuls of fragrant dried lavender look right at home among knitted winter garments; the porous woven swatches are ideal for releasing the scent of the herb. Hold two 4-inch square swatches back-to-back and hand-sew them together around the edges, leaving a 2-inch opening on the fourth side. Fill the sachet with lavender, and hand-sew the opening closed. If you wish, personalize the sachets with a monogram or other fanciful design; we cross-stitched a heart shape to one side of each sachet with a contrasting yarn before sewing the squares together. Use the weave of the fabric as a grid to keep stitches a uniform size.

Just google 'dried lavender' and there are many places online that should have it in bulk. OR...you could use any inexpensive herb or anything that holds onto fragrance and then just sprinkle 10 drops of lavender oil on it. you can get the oil the cheapest from puritan's pride (it's the cheapest I've found, when they have their "buy 1,get 2 free" sales). Also, in the article Martha gives several idea's with instruction on how to make eye glass cases, make-up case. The weave-it looms use to be popular from the 30's thru the 1970's, fell out of favor with people and in the recent years have started to become popular again.
These sachets were made with the "WEAVE-IT" 4" hand looms. I have a couple. You can find them on E-BAY. This article was in the 2006 MSL mag. You can make some GREAT things with these weave-its. Hope this info helps.
What about using a sweater that you are going to get rid of. I have a couple of woven ones that are out of shape or have a spot or [filtered word] somewhere. I think they would work well.

Frustrating not having what they used, but I think it was one of those wool yarns that varigates from fat to skinny. I would like to know what they wove it on - a potholder frame would be too big - ??

I was thinking the same thing. I think a sweater or even a felted sweater would work, but was also wondering if you can buy woven fabric? Interesting.
