Gift-Wrap Coasters

Introduction

Resources: Adhesive cork liner is available from the Container Store. Mod Podge, bone folders, and plexiglass squares can be found at any craft store, or online at michaels.com or artsuppliesonline.com.

Materials

  • Wrapping paper
  • Scissors
  • 4-inch by 4-inch squares or 4-inch-diameter circles of plexiglas or glass
  • Utility knife and board to cut on
  • Mod Podge glue sealant
  • Sponge brush
  • Cork with adhesive backing/shelf tiling
  • Bone folder
  • Ribbon
  • Martha's Famous Eggnog Recipe

Steps

  1. Step 1

Cut out a piece of paper slightly larger than the glass square. You can use any type of wrapping paper, or nice-looking kraft paper.

  2. Step 2

Apply Mod Podge solution with sponge brush lightly to one side of the glass -- brushing from the center out.

  3. Step 3

Place your paper face down onto the glued side. Smooth paper to glued side with bone folder -- make sure to remove all air bubbles.

  4. Step 4

Let stand until it's completely dry. If you mess up on the glue or paper, don't fret --just wipe off the glue and start over.

  5. Step 5

Trim off excess paper with a utility knife.

  6. Step 6

Peel off adhesive side to cork square, and attach to papered side of glass. Trim excess cork with a utility knife.

  7. Step 7

Tie four coasters together with decorative ribbon, and add a recipe card for Martha's Famous Eggnog.

I wanted to make personalized coasters too, but this method was hard especially since you have to be really careful when washing them. I found a product called Tilano Marble Coaster Kit where you can put your own images onto the surface. You seal the image so they are waterproof- I love them! http://www.tilano.net

This looks cute, but how well do the coasters work? A friend made me coasters last christmas with tile squares and stamped on them, but they are not effective coasters. We use coasters a lot, what would really absorb the liquid ?

I did this with photos of my two boys. Everyone I gave them to still thank me for them. And how much they love them.

You could also us scaps of wrapping paper and make a quilt pattern with them.

Eggs are fresh if they lie on the bottom of a glass of water, rather than float end-up.
