Fish Prints

Introduction

Resources: For more information on fish printing and to purchase fish replicas and fish-printing kits, visit acornnaturalists.com. T-shirts are from American Apparel. Speedball fabric screen-printing ink, printing blocks, and linoleum cutter are available from misterart.com. For more fun projects, check out these favorite crafts.

Materials

  • Whole fish or fish replica
  • Fabric screen-printing ink
  • Brayer
  • T-shirt
  • Hook template
  • Speedy-Cut printing block or eraser
  • Linoleum cutter
  • Pencil

Steps

  1. Step 1

Generously ink fish by rolling a brayer in fabric paint and then rolling onto fish. Place T-shirt front side down on inked fish and pat in place. Carefully lift T-shirt and lay front side up to dry.

  2. Step 2

Print hook template. Trace and fill in hook shape with pencil. Turn template over onto a printing block or eraser and rub the back of the template with the pencil to transfer the image. Carve around the transferred hook shape with a linoleum cutter to make a stamp.

  3. Step 3

Stamp a hook for the fish on the T-shirt with fabric paint. Allow to dry.

  4. Step 4

Set the fabric paint according to the paint manufacturer's instructions.

I tried making this using fabric and, also, acrylic paints. (I bought the fish from Acorn Naturalist.) I cannot get the detal to show. Could it be the paint? Maybe you HAVE to use screen-printing ink only?

Could you please upload a picture of this t-shirt. It would make making one (following the directions) so much easier for all of us visual people !!

My kids made these at VBS last year and LOVE them! It was by far the "coolest" thing they did all summer. They especially liked the imprint of the fish EYE. I must say that the scales are absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend this art project.
