Carrie Morey: Callie's Charleston Biscuits

Carrie Morey never dreamed that success would taste so good. As a mother of three girls, all younger than 4, she knew it would be an uphill battle to achieve her goal of being a success both inside and outside the home without a fleet of nannies, and without sacrificing family time.

Fortunately, in the delirium of late-night feedings with her first child, the idea for Callie's Charleston Biscuits materialized.

"My mother, Callie White, is a celebrated Charleston caterer who bakes phenomenal biscuits," says Carrie. "I asked myself, in the age of mass-produced fast food biscuits, is there a market for gourmet ones?" The answer was a resounding yes.

With a business plan written between burping babies, Carrie convinced her mother to postpone retirement and start the family-run Callie's Charleston Biscuits. "People are nostalgic about biscuits, and one bite of ours transports them to their grandmothers' kitchens," she says. Made by hand with absolutely no machinery, Callie's Charleston Biscuits come in four varieties and are shipped all over the United States.

"Our goal is to ensure that the tradition of baking biscuits isn't lost in this age of Blackberries and over-scheduling," says the busy mom. "It takes patience, balance, and whole lot of creativity on our part -- as well as my husband's -- to keep things moving, but our little company makes us proud."

I have not voted in 2-3 days, but every time I attempt to do so, I'm told I have already voted. I find this website very difficult, and question the validity of these votes.

Only a southerner can make biscuits this good! My guests fight over who gets the last one. There is nothing better than a "real" biscuit. Callie's are as good as any woman in my southern family has ever made...and that's a HUGE compliment!

These are wonderful! I even had a friend who recently moved to Wyoming order these as a part of a "southern" party for friends who were missing such goodies!

I first had these bisuits at a catered event. They were so good they actually made my mouth water. They will always be apart of any event I plan.

These biscuits are so delicious. Expecially great for vacation...a little something special but from the freezer! And great to have on hand for houseguests. A favorite...and who can beat a little taste from Charleston?!

  • MDACK 22 Oct, 2008

I stumbled across these biscuits at a local market shortly after moving to Charleston. I tried them and have been buying them since. My family always counts on having these when they visit and no holiday is complete without them now. These biscuits are the best ! I also love Carrie's story. She and her biscuits are truly remarkable. Marilyn Ackerman

Just a quick THANK YOU to all my supporters! It makes me feel so fortunate to have so many great people in my life that have written such nice things about us and our biscuits!

  • johnbux 18 Oct, 2008

These biscuits are awesome. I caution you to not buy just one bag, though, because once you try them, everyone will be very upset if you only made enough for them to have just one or two biscuits. Try them all, you can't go wrong.

I have never met a person juggle so many great things in life...and still enjoy life. Carrie has done an amazing job on making her life be real and be hers...when Carrie gets an idea, she explodes with it - which makes her a great success.
Callies biscuits are never left on the shelves...and i never go home to family without them - yummmy - they melt in your belly!

  • alcincali 17 Oct, 2008

Carrie has been cooking for me since we lived together in college. She is an amazing chef, mother and friend. There is no biscuit that compares to these!

  • NicciDickens 17 Oct, 2008

There is no other way to make your guests feel more Welcome than to have a batch of warm melt in your mouth Callie's biscuits waiting for them in the morning! I've also served them at parties and been to parties where they've been served. They are repeatedly the VERY FIRST item to go. Besides her biscuits being the talk of Charleston, she is also an amazing mother, wife, friend, and role model citizen. She manages to juggle it ALL and not miss a thing.

I am speaking for every South Carolina football fan in America when I say that tailgating is not complete without 3 essential items: sweet tea, alcohol, and Callie's Charleston Biscuits....Carrie- feel free to send me some ham biscuits...I am getting hungry just thinking about them...ok, I gotta get back to being a lawyer now...

  • ellenhenderson 16 Oct, 2008

Having known Carrie for many years it has been wonderful to watch her as she has developed this business - she reminds me of Martha Stewart because Martha took a chance when she started and look how successful she is. Plus these biscuits are the BEST thing you could ever eat!

I'm sure Callie's biscuits are as delicious as they look but I'm impressed by her idea of being with her children, in her home, and yet be able run a very successful business. She is fortunate to utilize all of her talents!

Callie's biscuits are the best I've ever had (next to my grandmother's, of course!)
I gave them as gifts last year and they were a hit.
