Mixing Colors and Patterns

Martha Stewart Living Television

Interior designer Victoria Hagan shared a few of her ideas on how to add texture and color to a living room couch by using throw pillows. Victoria says she starts with a single pattern and works from there, always keeping the room's palette in mind. She prefers to combine a more active design, such as a floral motif, with a graphic pattern. Colors aren't required to match. The arrangement of pillows starts symmetrically, but Victoria will often sandwich a solid-color pillow between a patterned pair to accent their designs. She usually doesn't mix more than three different patterns, and she tries to keep the pillows similar in size. Victoria also likes to drape a throw over the back or the arm of the sofa.

Special thanks to Victoria Hagan.
