Overdyeing Fabrics How-To

Change a fabric's color after fading it, with these easy steps

  • 2 plastic bins
  • Liquid fabric dye
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Detergent

  1. Step 1

Fill a plastic bin with 1/4 teaspoon of liquid fabric dye (available at drugstores), 6 quarts of hot water, and a scant 1/4 cup of salt. (If you are dyeing a large piece of fabric, double or triple this recipe.) Fill a second bin with cold water. Run the fabric under the tap in hot water.

  2. Step 2

Referring to the manufacturer's instructions, soak the fabric in the first bin until it absorbs the desired amount of color, 10 to 45 minutes. To intensify the color, add a few more drops of dye.

  3. Step 3

Thoroughly rinse the fabric in the bin of cold water. Launder the fabric with detergent, and dry it in the dryer.
