How-To

Glittered Stenciled T-Shirt Craft

The Martha Stewart Show, May 2010

Add some stylish flair to children's cotton T-shirts using glitter and a simple stencil.

Tools and Materials

  • Cotton T-shirt
  • Cardboard
  • Stencil
  • Masking tape
  • Fabric glue
  • Foam "pouncer" applicator
  • Glitter
  • Paper plate or tray

T-shirt How-To
1. Place cardboard inside T-shirt to protect bottom layer. Tape stencil in place as desired.

2. Use foam pouncer to apply fabric glue within stencil. Pour glitter over stencil and shake off into paper plate or tray. Carefully remove stencil and allow glue to dry completely. For best results, let fabric glue cure for 7 to 10 days before washing.

Resources
Stencils are available from Stencil 1. "OK to Wash It" fabric glue by Aleene's is available on Amazon. Glitter is available from Martha Stewart Crafts. All other tools and materials are available at crafts stores.

Once a shirt has been glittered and glue is cured, how do you "set" the glitter to keep it from flaking off?

I love this idea for a birthday party craft/favor. Will the glitter come off in the wash?
