Personalized Papier Mache Pinatas

These decorative pinatas are the perfect addition to any child's party, and are very easy to make.

  • Bowl
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Whisk
  • Balloon
  • Masking tape
  • Empty jar
  • Newspaper, cut into strips
  • Pin (to pop balloon)
  • Mod Podge
  • Double-sided tape
  • Yarn (for hair)
  • Printed picture of someone's face
  • Utility knife
  • Pinata fillings (such as candy or art supplies)

  1. Step 1

In a large bowl, add 1 part flour to 1 part water. Add salt to prevent mold. Whisk until smooth.

  2. Step 2

Inflate a balloon. Tape down knot with masking tape. Rest balloon on empty jar.

  3. Step 3

Dip strip of newspaper into mixture. Squeeze excess with fingers to minimize dripping. Lay several strips over balloon, and smooth with fingers. Repeat until balloon is covered twice. Let dry completely, then pop balloon with pin.

  4. Step 4

Cut the face pieces to fit onto the balloon. Apply to balloon and brush with Mod Podge.

  5. Step 5

Cut out trap door with utility knife. Fill pinata with various treats, such as candy or art supplies.

  6. Step 6

    Seal hole with tape.

I like the idea as a mask not as a pinata. I want to make a family of masks and maybe display them with pumpkins or for a scare crow head.

This seems out of line to me - and at a kid's party?!!! What are they thinking?

I just made these for the rehearsal dinner for my son's wedding. I did one each of him and his bride. I used yellow yarn for her and attached a tulle veil. For Joe I just painted "hair" because it is short and attached a top hat and bow tie. I did not fill them becaause I couldn't bear anyone whacking them. One person who saw them thought every married couple should have a set to whack-he said it would be good therapy-sicko lol! Julie

Is it me, or does anyone else find it creepy to give a child a pinata with someone's face on it and let them whack it?
