Whether used for canning, collecting, or decorative storage, Ball jars have been a kitchen staple for years.
Martha chatted about the jars' rich history with Martin Franklin, chairman and CEO of the Jarden Corporation, which manufactures the jars.
The Ball brothers began manufacturing fruit jars encased in wood during the 1880s. Soon after, they developed the signature glass jar, which evolved over time to include new colors and closure technologies.
The Ball jar, which celebrated its 125th birthday this year, is particularly popular during times of economic hardship, when people appreciate the affordability of canning. Sales also peaked in 1999 as home canners prepared for Y2K.
