Charming Locket How-To
1. Lay out your appliques in the design you want to create, since you do not want to move the items on the polish once you put them down. If you want to add appliques on top of others (such as a rhinestone in the center of a flower), use nail glue to stick them on before you start.
2. Take a locket and sand the center of the outside. This will allow the nail polish to "grip" to something. Wipe away dust with a paper towel.
3. Pour colored nail polish onto center of locket and fill area. Use the nail polish brush to pull the polish to cover all points on the face of the outside of the locket. The paint should come all the way to the lip.
4. While polish is still wet, use tweezers to place desired appliques on locket. Sometimes nail polish gets drawn to appliques, so you can add additional polish to shallow areas with a nail brush or toothpick. Let dry overnight. If nail polish drips on your appliques, wait until it dries and clean it up using nail polish remover and a cotton swab.
Resources
Mandy Moore and Martha used large lockets from metalliferous.com. The rhinestones are from M & J Trimming. Nail polish and tweezers can be found at most drug stores. You can find sandpaper (we used 220-grit paper) at hardware stores.

What a neat idea. It's a great way to personalize a gift. I'm going to look for a gold heart locket because those are my daughters favorite. Her birthday is coming up and I think she would love this as a gift.
Can you find the actual lockets at Michaels and/or JoAnn's also? I couldn't find the correct ones on the website included in the instructions. Thank you.
These are so beautiful, and can be easily personalized for each person on your list, I can find all the supplies in one place, Micheal's craft store, as well as Joanne's fabric store
i have searched all the suggested places for the appliques and can't fine the ones like what martha used. HELP! i'm trying to make them for christmas gifts. also, where do you get the little flowers??
You can find a bunch of appliques (aka stampings) as well as lockets and bezels on www.Etsy.com
I would go to a bead store for the flowers
You can get just about everything you need from JoAnn's either the store or the website, also, Michaels, Hobby Lobby. Tiny beads can be picked up at a local bead store or online. Just look for tiny things or items that can be taken apart to get the smallest decorations out of them.
Does anyone know where to get the flowers?
Oops...For the rhinestones, I found them on http://www.mjtrim.com/Catalog/Category/113.aspx?refArea=Left Or you can get cute little ones from the nail art section in Cosmetics at Walmart. For the appliques go to http://www.metalliferous.com/images/BMC6166.pdf and you will find butterflies on page 62
I'm having a difficult time finding the gold leaf and butterfly applique that Martha used from metalliferous.com. Has anyone been able to find something similar on that website or anywhere else?
This craft is such a good idea for almost any age! I've been trying to find/order a locket and similar rhinestones as the ones Martha used, but I couldn't. I even went to Michaels and nothing. I was wondering how or where I can find these jewls please.
Thank you so much for the tip regarding where to get the lockets! I am planning a "Mom's Morning of Tea of Crafts" when the kids go back to school and appreciate being able to order so many of the craft items online!
I found a locket that is good for this craft at
http://www.jewelryfindings-online.com/default.htm
Click on the locket link on the right menu bar and then scroll down to the end of the page to item #971R for $3.96. I'd say this is the best size for all the cute little embellishments you want to add. They also have some pendant settings (that you normally put cameos or cabs in) that would work well, but are a lot cheaper, if you don't mind not having an actual locket.
Martha said to get the lockets at your local craft store. Maybe Michaels or Jo-Anns. The little embelishments are what you can get at metaliferous.com.
where do you find lockets with a border? Metalliferous has some, but they do not have them with borders. it might be harder to make if it doesn't have a border.
I tried clicking on silver than findings and those lockets arent the type you need. I am a jewelry designer, I'm even having a hard time locating these locket/pendants. If anyone finds them post here and let us know :)
I would try JoAnn Fabrics, Michael's, Hobby Lobby or the like for cheap plain lockets and even the decorations to make these.
You can also find many different applliques online. Do a google search for 'flat back appliques'. It may take some time to find ones you like, but I'm sure it will be well worth the time.
I found some lockets for 1.99 a piece at Jo Ann Fabrics (joann.com).
sorry i found this http://metalliferous.com/newsMarthaStewartJuly27.php
you have to click on the "go to store" link
I really would like to make this locket for Xmas gifts. I went to metalliferous on line catalog but there were none of the adornments like Martha used. Does anyone have any oher rsources?
I went to metalliferous.com. If you click on "silver" and then "findings", you will find "lockets" on the list. I could not find a price list or a way to order. I emailed, asking if they have a catalog or price list. I love this locket! I hope to make it, too! Good luck!
I've been trying to find some plain lockets to paint myself but can't find them anywhere! Well, I did find some but they were significantly pricey and I definitely don't want to ruin them as I try to craft this for the first time. I looked in metalliferous.com but I can't find them! Any suggestions? Thanks!
