Purple Martin Birds

The Martha Stewart Show, October 2010

Purple martin birds rely almost exclusively upon man-made structures, like expert Larry Melcher's gourd birdhouses, for nesting sites.

Purple martins are the largest type of swallow in eastern North America and they are extremely social. Creatures of habit, they live in colonies and migrate in groups from South America to Canada, returning to the same nests year after year. Rarely seen on the ground, the graceful and acrobatic flyers eat, drink, and bathe in the air. On average, they lay a clutch of five to seven eggs, and very few have more than one brood per year.

Thanks to Larry and to Martha Stewart for the great show. Another good place to get kettle gourds for martins houses is gourdgracious.com, a Mississippi vendor.
