Fresh flowers are the stars of simply iced cakes -- and they can mirror the wedding's theme as well. Sleek calla lilies befit a sophisticated event, while fluttery carnations emphasize romance. Edible flowers, such as roses and violets, are lovely cake decorations and delightful accompaniments when served alongside each slice (make sure they're organically grown by a reputable source).
Flowers that aren't edible may be used as well: Place nontoxic blooms, such as tulips, on the tiers and remove them just before serving. Or they could be arranged on Styrofoam layers or clear acetate so they don't touch the icing. Let your florist and baker guide you in cultivating a confection that's as spectacular as nature itself.
