For graphic designer and author Kit Hinrichs, the evolution and many reinterpretations of the American flag over its proud 225-year history have always been a source of inspiration and intrigue. Kit has collected flags and other patriotic memorabilia for more than 35 years, and the quintessential flag in his 3,200-piece collection was sewn by his great-great-great-aunt Ida in 1865 and features 36 stars. Some of Kit’s other favorites include an embroidered flag commemorating an 1877 conflict with Korea (spelled “Corea” on the flag itself); a nineteenth-century handsewn flag whose stars seem to have been placed on the blue portion of the cloth at random; a centennial flag created just after Nebraska joined the union in 1867; a World War I–era dress adorned with numerous flag patterns; and a large nineteenth-century quilt designed to replicate the Stars and Stripes.
